Department of Defence
Ecological Research and Monitoring Program 2002 - 2008
Eco Logical Australia was engaged by the Department of Defence to undertake a five year research and monitoring program on the effects of grazing on threatened flora and fauna and their habitat on a 12,000 ha site at Morundah, NSW.
The program collected monthly data on the percent cover of grasses, forbs, litter and bare ground at 360 1x1 m quadrats across the site, and conducted annual counts of five threatened flora species at eighteen permanent points.
The outputs of the project included:
- An understanding of the distribution of threatened flora and fauna on site
- A mechanism to rapidly respond to the dynamic nature of native grassland and grazing induced changes to habitat structure to maximise the area of habitat for threatened species
- Development of a management plan for the long term management of the site
