Environmental Assessment of Dredging Proposal
Kempsey Shire Council contracted Eco Logical Australia to undertake an assessment of sand removal options from Killick Creek, on the northern NSW coast.
The project involved an assessment of the feasibility of dredging and disposal options and the environmental impacts of works necessary to remove sand from the creek. Specific tasks included:
- Bathymetric survey of the creek
- Contaminant sampling and testing of sediments (including potential acid sulfate soils)
- Aquatic and terrestrial species survey and mapping
- Analysis of dredging techniques and disposal site options
- Recommendations for mitigation measures to reduce environmental impacts
- Identification of legislative requirements
- Consultation with government stakeholders regarding approval requirements
- Development of a long-term monitoring strategy
