Cherrybrook Tree Canopy Audit

Department of Planning & Environment

The Cherrybrook Station Precinct, located in Sydney metropolitan area, contracted Eco Logical Australia (ELA) to conduct an audit of the makeup of the current tree canopy across the Precinct in order to meet the Draft Green Infrastructure Policy for NSW (Greener Places) initiative.

ELA provided an audit of the makeup of current tree canopy across the Cherrybrook Station Precinct. ELA staff analysed LiDAR and spatial data using GIS and interpreted aerial photos. From these analyses ELA derived a suite of attributes (e.g. canopy height, age class, vegetation type) that were applied to the urban tree canopy extent. Then, ELA staff validated the data in the field by assessing the tree canopy across the Precinct. A final validated map of tree canopy extent and attributes was created. Analysis of the attributes revealed that the tree canopy covers 26% of the Precinct, and that only 5% of the tree canopy were street trees, while 88% were on private land.

This audit will assist in developing future urban tree canopy guidelines for the Cherrybrook Station Precinct. It provided the base information necessary to build and enhance the Precinct’s urban environmental values and will also provide a starting point to set longer term policies and goals for the Precinct.
